The spacer is the strip holding the two panes apart around the edge. Traditional aluminium spacers conduct heat straight through, which is why old units go cold and damp at the bottom corners. Warm-edge spacers are a low-conductivity composite, so the edge of the glass stays warmer and condensation is far less likely.

They stop condensation forming on the glass, because the inner pane is no longer cold. They do not remove moisture from the house. If you dry washing indoors or have a poorly ventilated bathroom, you may still see damp elsewhere — trickle vents and extractor fans deal with that side of it.

On most replacement work, yes. Building Regulations require replacement windows to provide ventilation at least equivalent to what was there before, and current guidance pushes towards trickle vents on habitable rooms. It depends on size, style, glazing spec and how many. A small casement is a very different job from a three-sided structural bay. Usually, yes. Profiles, colours, glazing bar patterns and handle styles can be matched closely enough that a partial replacement does not stand out. Where an exact match is impossible — an obsolete profile, for instance — we will show you the nearest option before you commit.

White is standard. Anthracite grey, black, cream, chartwell green, rosewood, golden oak and irish oak are all common. Woodgrain foils on a white internal face are popular where you want the character outside and a bright finish inside.

A well-made unit fitted properly should give 20 years or more. The sealed unit usually fails before the frame does, and that is a reglaze rather than a replacement. Hardware — hinges, handles, locking gear — is the other wear item and is straightforward to renew.
